Why You Should Choose a Green Clean

Home | Blog | Why You Should Choose a Green Clean

Introduction

For many decades, we have been cleaning our homes and businesses non-stop with cleaners. Depending on the type of mess we face, we have to decide what kind of cleaner we want to use. One bottle contains a cleaning formula made with chemicals. And the other bottle contains a green cleaning solution. While they are both effective against tough messes and can be used on a daily cleaning basis, there are many reasons why you should pick a green cleaner.

Up to now, we have been facing the threat known as climate change. Climate change is caused by how our actions affect our environment and increased irregular weather patterns in regions that aren’t supposed to naturally occur. It started with carbon dioxide exhausted by gasoline and diesel engine vehicles polluting the air. Environmental studies for the past decades are adding one of the other leading causes is what materials our cleaners made out of that can affect the atmosphere.

How was the First Green Cleaner Developed?

In 1956, a company called Spray Nine Corporation invented the first bottled spray product containing a cleaning formula made with water and chemicals. It was able to sanitize from home surfaces to cleaning filth off of vehicles. Spray Nine later improved their formula by adding a disinfectant in 1968 to kill germs and certain viruses, becoming the go-to cleaner for over a decade.

It was until, during the 1970s, a man named Bruce FaBrizio came across a deadly reaction with a chemical-made cleaner while working with his father at a coffee shop. When FaBrizio applied the cleaner to coffee stains that contain tannic acid, it created a foul and dangerous odor to inhale. Together, FaBrizio and his father began on their mission to develop a biodegradable cleaning solution.

The formula took three long years to develop and run many tests in laboratories and third-party facilities. In 1981, the first green cleaner product became known as Simple Green and hit the store shelves. Today, for over 40 years, Simple Green has been recognized as an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) safer choice, Green Seal approved, and a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) bio-based product.

Green is Less Harmful

It’s important to read the labels for any cleaner that is labeled green. To most consumers, the word green would make them believe the cleaning product is safe to use without any protective gear. This is not true as certain green cleaners can contain a single chemical element or an added disinfectant for improving cleaning qualities. A product that is labeled green means it is proven to be less harmful to consumers and the environment.

For a cleaner to be considered green it needs to:

  • Contain ingredients that are either biodegradable or compostable.
  • The packaging is recyclable, reusable, biodegradable, or compostable.
  • Labeled with an EPA Safer Choice and Design for the Environment (DfE) label.

If certain green cleaners cause any allergy reaction, contact a doctor about the product you use so they can look through the ingredient label for future allergy prevention.

Can Be Contained Longer

On all cleaning products, they will have an expiration date on the bottom or back of their container. A cleaning product that contains chemicals can expire within two years. They also carry more risk in places that contain high heat with their flammable ingredients. Even if you stored them properly in a cool, dry place, the expiration will cause those ingredients to be less effective on messes.

A green cleaner can outlast a regular chemical-made cleaner due to its ingredients being from a more natural source. They are also much safer to store in the house as well. The best way you can keep your green cleaner longer is by having a separate fridge to keep them cool and ready to use.

Easy to Make

If you are a bit concerned about buying a green cleaner, you can make a green cleaner at home. Many homemade recipes will have a base made with these ingredients:

  • Water as a liquid base.
  • Baking Soda to improve cleaning qualities and preserve the cleaning solution longer.
  • Soap for sanitizing.

Some recipes use natural ingredients to create a more effective cleaner. Most will have white vinegar due to its acidic properties can help remove tough stains but will leave a sour smell in your house and workspace. You can replace white vinegar using citrus juice from lemon and oranges for they carry similar acidic properties to fight those same stains. And they will mix it with tree oil to leave a pleasant scent in the atmosphere. After you created your cleaning solution, pour it into a reusable spray bottle.

Is it Worth the Price?

With consumers becoming more aware of how a green cleaner can be effective for cleaning surfaces, they worry about the pricing. Cleaning products aren’t cheap no matter how companies develop their cleaning formula. The real problem with a cleaning product’s pricing is how their developers distribute them and cover production costs causing sale prices to vary.

The best way you can get your hands at a good price for a green cleaner is knowing how often you clean regularly. For homeowners, buying a medium-sized container that is about 16 fluid ounces to 24 fluid ounces can come to spend between about $6 to $12, or previously mentioned, create a homemade green cleaner. For business owners and commercial cleaners, research the pricing and quality of the products you want to use before ordering.

Conclusion

A green cleaner can make a huge difference in the world. They are a safer alternative to chemical-made cleaners to prevent more harmful effects on the environment and the people we love. Even if some green cleaners are more expensive, it’s worth the price to spend more or to take the time to create our own.
