What are the Best Ways to Clean Your Office Space

Home | Blog | What are the Best Ways to Clean Your Office Space

Although it can sometimes be a pain in the rear, keeping your office space nice and tidy is a big deal. With the country in the throws of a pandemic, and quite a few businesses closing, don’t let your business fall to the wayside.

As a business owner you can’t ignore the elephant in the room: COVID-19. Just in the Dallas county alone, there have been over 137,000 cases diagnosed, and 1245 deaths related to COVID-19 at the time of this writing.

Keeping your offices clean has become a must. It protects you, your employees and your customers, even if you work from home. Let’s take a look to see what are the best ways to clean your office space.

Tips for Keeping Office Spaces Clean

Empty Those Waste Baskets

It should go without saying that your office trash needs to be emptied each and every day and not just once in a while. Trust us when we say that you do not need a customer to come into your office when it reeks of onions and ketchup from that burger you had two days ago.

Another benefit of getting rid of that trash is to prevent bugs in your office space. Bugs are not only a major nuisance, they are riddled with all sorts of nasty bacteria and viruses. Just imagine (on second thought, don’t) all of the eggs they lay everywhere, and the feces and sometimes blood they leave on every surface they touch.

Disinfect Everything in Your Office Daily

It’s said that all is fair in love and war. Remember those words when it comes to disinfecting your workspace. Sanitizing is probably the most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of harmful germs, allergy causing bacteria and viruses.

COVID-19, flu and cold viruses do not discriminate. Have absolutely no mercy when it comes to disinfecting office areas. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that tests have shown that using something like Lysol Disinfectant Spray can eradicate the COVID-19 virus and droplets within two minutes. Use disinfectant daily.

Use Hand to Hand Combat

After getting your work space cleaned up, consider deploying hand sanitizer stations where appropriate. We recommend placing one inside the entrance to your business. Another great location for a station is on the outside of restrooms. Interestingly, a poll from earlier this year claims that 40% of Americans don’t wash their hands after using the restroom.

  • The station can be as simple as a small table with some hand sanitizer and paper towels on it.
  • Leave a sign on the table inviting and requiring everyone to use the products before conducting their business.
  • Place a trash can under the table and you’ve got yourself a beautiful and highly practical hand sanitizing station.

Common Areas Have Common Problems

Places like the shared break areas need periodic cleaning throughout the work day. Using some type of honor system and a quick class on cleaning eating surfaces will go a long way. Disinfecting wipes can be sat at each table for easy access so employees can just clean as they go.

You should also leave more sanitizing wipes on the counter so appliances can be wiped down periodically, especially refrigerator handles and coffee pot handles. When employees see these wipes they are more likely to feel empowered to clean an area properly. Also, discourage employees from eating at their desks, as it defeats the purpose of cleaning the shared breakroom.

Rule the Restroom

Public restrooms cannot be ignored no matter how much you hate to clean them. When you figure there are nearly 500,000 bacterial cells per square inch on most restroom surfaces, you should feel compelled to get out the disinfectant and get to wiping.

  • Concentrate not only on the regular surfaces, but on areas such as stall doors where people would normally touch.
  • Toilet paper dispensers should be wiped down also.
  • Consider installing disinfecting wipes in all stalls to keep any bacteria off of toilet seats.
  • Leave hand sanitizer next to changing stations along with sanitizing wipes.
  • Always double check that soap dispensers are always full. Adding antibacterial soaps to the dispensers would be best.
  • Invest in handsfree water dispensers to eliminate repeated faucet handle contact.
  • Automatic hand dryers are great. They not only dry hands better, but also save on the cost of maintaining paper dispensers.
  • Consider contracting a commercial cleaning service to power wash your restrooms every few months. They are experts at taking care of those tiled walls and floors, sinks and much more.

Curtains, Drapes, Blinds and Carpets

It’s easy to neglect fixtures and window treatments such as these. Bacteria and dust build up quickly on these materials. It’s recommended to send your curtains and drapes out to the cleaners every few months, just like your carpets. But to be honest, most businesses don’t bother. Traditional curtains and drapes not only look great, but are very handy at controlling direct sunlight and temperature in your offices. The downside is that they are equally great at attracting dust and bacteria, which doesn’t do anyone any good.

An even better alternative is to consider replacing your curtains and drapes with window blinds. Today’s modern blinds offer several advantages over curtains. They are much cheaper than curtains, extremely durable and come in various styles and widths in order to maintain privacy. Plus, window blinds are very easy to clean and keep disinfected. You’ll save a mint in the long run by eliminating the costs involved with curtain cleaning.
